In order to explore the healing effect of bereavement-based picture books for children, 9 bereavement-based picture books such as “Little Scar” were analyzed using the grief counseling theory as the guiding framework. The study found that most bereavement picture books constructed a complete grieving process, which could be divided into five stages: the beginning of the story: the past was narrated and positive emotional connection was mapped; the first turning point: the fact of death was expressed in euphemism; the emotional climax: the protagonist strongly expressed his negative emotion; the second turning point: seeking a meaning of life beyond death, and the end of the story: saying goodbye to the past and starting a new life. However, there are still some shortcomings that can be optimized. For example, the creation of picture books should face the biological fact of the death of relatives, construct the practical significance of the “eternal life” of relatives, and combine with Chinese local culture for innovation. As parents and educators, we should pay attention to the mental health of bereaved children, flexibly use picture books to educate children about death, and help bereaved children go through grief.
