This study aims to explore maternal gatekeeping behaviors for father's involvement in childrearing,by
interviewing 18 pairs ofparents with preschoolchildren.Theresultsof qualitative analysis show thatmaternal
gatekeeping behaviors contain fourforms:explicitsupportivebehaviorsincluding encouragement, appreciation,
directpraise,instruction andassistance;implicit supportive behaviors including indirect praise, avoiding criticism,
covering up and supportive body information; explicit limiting behaviors including direct negation,intervention,
interruption and disruptive behavior; and implicit limiting behavior including indirect negation, disparagement,
redoing task, and limiting body information. Reasons why maternal gatekeeping occurs and influences which
maternal gatekeeping plays on father involvement are worth intensive study. |
